Endlich Nach Zahn

Endlich Nach Zahn is a collection of generative artworks. Created by Alex Russell, it uses a system called ApeiroPattern. The system has two parts. Firstly, there is a computer programme (code). Secondly, there is a library of scans of hand-made images.  The code models a range of pattern-making and compositional rules. These are developed from methods used in a range of creative processes, including textile design, graphic design and fine art. When the code runs, it uses the rules to arrange the library images. Every new run creates a unique ApeiroPattern artwork.

In the summer of 2016, Alex did a series of pencil drawings of flowers, inspired in part by the work of botanic illustrator Martin Zahn. Making the drawings triggered a whole series of other work with pencil. Between then and now, working mainly in sketchbooks, he made hundreds of figurative and abstract pieces. Endlich Nach Zahn is a celebration of pencil and paper, creating artwork from a library of around 2000 hand-drawn images. The unique, one-off prints that the code creates look like complex pencil drawings. They are generative, but don’t necessarily look like they are.
