Alex Russell

Alex Russell’s richly-coloured, deeply-layered paintings are created with a variety of collage, painting and drawing techniques. His process begins using systems for making art that combine models of composition and colour (from art and design) with complex systems (from science and maths). As each piece develops, a more intuitive approach takes over and Alex allows the artwork itself to guide him what to do.

Alex’s current painting practice began with a series of development pieces originally intended to form a library of images for his prints. As the artworks emerged, some of them took on a life of their own and became a series of mixed-media paintings. Rather than seeing them as a separate part of his practice, Alex was fascinated by the underlying connections between the paintings and his established printmaking processes. They have heralded a significant step forward in his work, allowing him to find new ways of exploring the balance between experimentation and fine-tuning that lies at the heart of his art.

All paintings are on board, mounted on a wooden panel frame. They are treated with archival, re-dissolvable varnish and supplied with a hanging cord on the reverse.
Each one is signed by the artist and includes a Certificate of Authenticity.
